2 | Certain Uncertainty: Teaching quantum physics in Year 9 classrooms Quantum physics can leave even experienced physicists feeling uncertain. How can we expect Year 9 students to feel certain in their understanding? My PhD has focused on developing the appropriate language, activities and more to teach year 9 students challenging quantum science concepts. Concepts covered include photons as packets of light energy, wave and particle models (with an improved description), probability, and momentum. I evaluated the change in understanding through test and interview data and found that students in year 9 became more certain in their understanding of the uncertainty of quantum science. | Kyla Adams Kyla is a PhD student at UWA with OzGrav as part of the Einstein-First project. Her research focuses on creating ways to put our best understanding of quantum physics in classrooms. She achieves this by synthesising the relevant concepts, developing activities, and learning sequences, working directly with teachers and students, and using data analysis methods to interpret test results. She has done graduate research in gravitational waves and quantum liquids and is an experienced science communicator. | 15 + 5 mins | Â | Â |
